Moving to Petersburg, VA?

There are many reasons why you may be relocating to Petersburg. You may be setting off for your new life on your own at college. You may be relocating because of employment reasons or you may just want to relocate to get a change in scenery. Whatever the reason, here are a few things you may be interesting in know about the city you have chosen to relocate to.

Atmosphere: There are several colleges and universities located in the Petersburg area. But for the record, Petersburg is not just another college town by far. Petersburg is an independent city located on the east coast mid-way between New York and Florida. It is located less than 25 miles from the capital, Richmond, VA.  According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 23.2 square miles (60.1 km²), of which, 22.9 square miles (59.3 km²) of it is land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km²) of it (1.29%) is water. Downtown Petersburg is the locating of many antique shops, restaurants and cafes and historic sites. This includes museums, churches, homes and the Petersburg Historic Foundation.

Petersburg is rich with history. Petersburg was founded on December 17, 1748 and is located on the Appomattox River. It was originally to be named Peter’s Point after Peter Jones who opened a trading post not far from Petersburg and traded with the Native Americans in the area. In 2006, on Pocahontas Island, evidence was found of early Native American settlement dating back to 6500 BC.

If you are sending your student off to school at one of the local colleges or universities in Petersburg, VA, you may want to consider off campus housing. Some of the benefits of off-campus housing include:

•    The ability to learn to live on their own
•    Establish a favorable credit rating for the future
•    And a reduction in on campus distractions.

Although the discussion of on or off campus housing is one that is between your family and your child. Only you know what will ultimately be best for your child, some of the things you may want to consider when is:

•    Location
•    Space
•    Cost
•    Area amenities
•    Transportation
•    And crime rates.
